Key with key fob in hand

If you find yourself in Bellaire, and your VW key fob isn’t working, chances are that you need VW key battery replacement. Your VW key fob is a powerful tool, and it’ll keep you on the road for years when you know how to change the battery in a VW key fob. The service department at Serra Volkswagen of Traverse City is here to help, even if you need a VW key replacement. Find out everything you need to know about your VW key battery below.

Which VW Key Battery Do I Need?

The first step in learning how to change a VW key fob battery is knowing which battery your fob requires. Newer VW vehicles made after 1999 have a VW key fob that looks like a pod with buttons on one side and a retractable backup key. These VW key fobs require a CR2032 battery. If you drive an older Volkswagen with a key fob that looks like a car key, you most likely need a CR1632 battery. You can find these batteries at most big box stores.

VW Key Battery Replacement: Step-by-Step

When it’s time for a VW key battery replacement, you’ll need a small screwdriver and a new CR2032 battery. Wrap the screwdriver with a small bit of tape to avoid scratching or damaging your fob. Then follow these steps to replace your VW key battery replacement:

  1. Hold the button on your Volkswagen key fob until the retractable backup key pops out.
  2. Grasp the fob firmly, or attach it to a small metal key ring that you can hold on your index finger, so you can get a good grip.
  3. Locate the seam that connects the back and front of your fob. Pull them apart with your fingers, and then use the flat-head screwdriver to finish prying them apart. Take care to avoid scratching the inside.
  4. Remove the dead battery and insert the new one, with the positive side facing down.
  5. Close the key fob case tightly to hold everything in place until it clicks back together.

What if you need to be somewhere in Lake City before you can replace your VW key fob battery? That’s where the retractable backup key comes in! Even if your Volkswagen has keyless entry or push-to-start, just hold the retractable key below the ignition to start the engine.
